A new African State but could it be another of Failed States?

Africa has a long list of failed and wonna be failed states.

The Comprehensive Peace agreement(CPA) signed in 2005 did put an end to Africa’s longest civil war. Among the premises  of the agreement between the government Khartoum and the SPLA( Sudanese People’s Liberation Army) was a referendum due 9th January 2011.

The creation of a new African State on 9th January next year may see a new entry to the list of Africa’s failed and wonna be failed states. Without a clear implimentation of the CPA, this vast African State may be plunged to its state of the past 25 years before the agreement.

Despite the signing of the peace deal, Sudan is yetto see real peace. In Darfur, the janjaweed is still fighting aganist Khartoum and a humanitarian crisis prevails.

President Bashir is now indicted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes and crimes aganist  humanity. His arrest would would restore  the conflict in the sudan and back to the civil unrest.

Despite the prospects for the referendum, mechanisms for separation from the north have not been drawn. The south holds vast oil deposits that the government in Khartoum would want to have access.Bashir’s administration has been accused of misappropriation of the revenue generated from the oil and this has spurred tension between the north and the south.

The African Union and IGAD that oversaw the CPA should put in place mechanismsto ensure that there is a peaceful transititon after the referendum to ensure that the bitter civil war is not restored.
